The Center for Excellence in Polling recently surveyed a national sample of likely voters on their attitudes toward welfare policy. Results indicate that voters take concerns about welfare fraud seriously and support commonsense reforms to ensure the integrity of welfare programs.

71%

of likely voters support conducting welfare eligibility checks frequently and with better technology to ensure that recipients remain eligible for welfare programs.1 Support for this reform hovers around 70 percent across different groups of voters, including Independent voters (73%) and women (69%). While support soars among Republicans (79%), the only voters substantially below that seven in 10 mark are Democratic voters, who still overwhelmingly support welfare cross-checks (62%).

The Bottom Line

Voters across the political spectrum support welfare integrity measures. Policymakers have a rare opportunity to enact meaningful reform on an issue with broad bipartisan support among voters.

1 Support numbers are obtained by combining “strongly support” and “somewhat support” responses.
