Medical debt is a leading cause of bankruptcy for American families.
Many patients report being surprised by a medical bill, sometimes costing thousands of dollars, that they must pay out of pocket after a test, doctor’s appointment, or procedure because they weren’t aware of the cost ahead of time.
An overwhelming majority of all likely voters—nearly 90 percent—support health care price transparency as a meaningful solution to surprise medical bills. Health care price transparency gives patients the ability to know what their real costs will be at least 72 hours prior to receiving non-emergency care.
Giving patients the information they need to make health care decisions is not a partisan issue. Republicans (86%), Democrats (89%), and Independents (88%) are united in their support for greater price transparency in health care.
