The Center for Excellence in Polling (CEP) recently surveyed likely voters in Arkansas on the topic of passing ballot initiatives in the state. Specifically, CEP asked voters about increasing the popular vote threshold for passing new laws and constitutional amendments.

Results indicate broad and bipartisan support for increasing the threshold.

Overall:

  • 73 percent of Arkansas voters say that proposed constitutional amendments should require 60 percent of voters to approve them before taking effect. This includes eight in 10 Republicans and seven in 10 Independents and Democrats.
  • 68 percent of likely voters say statewide laws that are placed on the ballot should garner support from 60 percent of voters before taking effect. Support for this measure is also significant and bipartisan with 77 percent of Republicans, 65 percent of Democrats, and 61 percent of Independents expressing support.

The bottom line: Voters in Arkansas overwhelmingly want proposed constitutional amendments and new laws to represent the will of Arkansans, and say the vote threshold for referenda should be increased to 60 percent.
